One day, after years of talk, I finally found the courage to try stand-up comedy.
I wanted to know what it would be like to be on a stage, by myself, telling jokes that I had written. So I found a class that taught me techniques while providing a safe space to “bomb” in relative anonymity. Although failing at any new endeavor is a necessary first step on the road to mastery, it can still feel deeply uncomfortable. Fortunately, the other students in the class were incredibly talented and supportive people who made the whole process fun!
I performed the set below at our student showcase in April 2023.
Ultimately, I decided that I am not a stand-up comedian although I continue to be a fan of the art. This experience underscored the value of pushing myself outside of my comfort zone from time to time; I felt more confident after the showcase. As the wisest amongst us already know, growth does not happen when we are comfortable! I definitely grew after this.
